Evacuation Procedures

All businesses will have an established evacuation procedure which all members of staff must be familiar with. All new employees including trainees and temporary employees must be made aware of these procedures as soon as possible after starting. Generally a basic health and safety induction should be carried out on the employee’s first day and completed by the end of the first week.

All employees should be familiar with:

  • The company Fire and Evacuation Procedures.
  • The roles and responsibilities of all employees in the event of an emergency.
  • The location, and contents of all drill notices.
  • The location of all fire alarms, fire exits and escape routes.
  • The location and operating instructions of the fire extinguishers.
  • The types and appropriate uses of each of the extinguishers.
  • The location of the designated assembly points.

    The Fire and Evacuation Procedures

    This should be clearly displayed and accessible. It will contain a statement of the company procedures including how to raise the alarm, what to do when the alarm is raised and reporting procedures for the assembly points.

    The roles and responsibilities of employees

    Each employee must be aware of their own as well as other employees’ responsibilities.

    Drill notices

    Drill notices will contain instructions of escape rotes and assembly points

    Fire alarms, exits and escape routes

    All fire alarms, exits and designated escape routes must be accessible and clearly marked and visible. The assembly points must also be clearly marked.

    Fire Extinguishers

    Employees should be aware of all the locations and uses for the different types of portable fire extinguishers that are available to them.
