The trunk, or central region of the body, consists of the thorax and the abdomen. The thorax contains the heart and the lungs which are supported by the ribcage. The muscles of the thoracic wall aid breathing. The diaphragm separates the thorax from the abdomen. Unlike the thorax, the abdomen has no bone support, the internal organs are held entirely by layers of strong muscle.
