Functions of the Blood
Transport | The blood transports essential substances to and from all the cells in the body. These include hormones, electrolytes, nutrients waste products and gases. |
Defence | The blood contains specialized cells and chemicals that defend the body against toxins and pathogens. |
Clotting | Although usually a liquid, blood has the ability to clot which prevents excessive blood loss if the blood vessel is damaged. The clot also prevents harmful micro-organisms from entering the wound. |
Heat temperature Regulator | Blood absorbs heat from warm areas of the body and releases the heat in cooler areas. |
