DESCRIPTION
FUNCTION
Compact
This bone type is hard and very dense. It is made up of concentric circles, with the centre of the circles containing nerves, lymph and blood vessels. These run lengthways and are known as Haversian canals, the whole arrangement is known as the Haversian system. The concentric rings around the canal are known as lamellae. Bone cells or osteocytes are located in spaces called lacunae.
It forms the outer layer of the bones and provides support protection and strength.
Cancellous
It consists of columns of bone called trabeculae (meaning little beams). Spaces between the trabeculae are filled with red bone marrow.
It provides strength without weight. It acts like braces that are used to support buildings. It is also filled with red bone marrow which produces billions of blood cells on a daily basis
